The Clumber Spaniel is believed to have originated in France before being developed further in England, with the breed's name derived from Clumber Park in Nottinghamshire, the estate of the Duke of Newcastle, during the late 18th century. It is a gentle, loyal, and somewhat dignified breed known for its calm demeanor, affectionate nature, and tendency to be reserved with strangers. This breed was developed as a slow, methodical flushing and retrieving spaniel, particularly suited to hunting in dense undergrowth for pheasant and other game birds.
