The Podenco Canario is an ancient primitive breed native to the Canary Islands of Spain, thought to descend from dogs brought to the islands by ancient Phoenician and Egyptian traders thousands of years ago. It is an athletic, intelligent, and affectionate breed that is loyal to its family but can be independent and reserved around strangers, with a powerful prey drive inherited from its hunting ancestry. The breed was developed to hunt rabbits across the volcanic and often rocky terrain of the Canary Islands, using sight, scent, and hearing in combination.
