The Canadian Eskimo Dog is one of North America's oldest and rarest indigenous breeds, developed over thousands of years by the Thule people, ancestors of the modern Inuit, in the Arctic regions of Canada. It is a powerful, courageous, and loyal dog with a strong pack instinct, remarkable endurance, and an ability to thrive in extreme cold conditions. The breed was essential to Inuit survival as a sled dog for transportation across sea ice and tundra, and was also used for hunting polar bears and seals.
