The Alano Español is an ancient Spanish breed believed to have been brought to the Iberian Peninsula by the Alani people during the 5th century, with documented presence in Spain for over a millennium. They are confident, tenacious, calm, and deeply loyal dogs that are protective of their family and highly driven in working situations. This breed was historically used for big game hunting, war, cattle herding, and bull-baiting, making it one of the most versatile working breeds in Spanish history.
