The Kurdish Mastiff, also known as the Peshmerga or Kurdish Kangal, is an ancient livestock guardian breed originating from the mountainous Kurdish regions spanning parts of Iraq, Iran, Turkey, and Syria. They are powerful, courageous, and fiercely protective dogs with a strong territorial instinct and an independent nature forged through centuries of working without direct human supervision. Bred to protect flocks of sheep and goats from predators such as wolves, bears, and jackals in the rugged mountain terrain of the Kurdish highlands.
