The Rafeiro do Alentejo, also called the Alentejo Mastiff, is an ancient Portuguese livestock guardian breed originating from the Alentejo plains of southern Portugal, with roots linked to large Mastiff-type dogs brought from Asia centuries ago. It is a calm, self-assured, and independent breed that is devoted to its family but naturally reserved and wary of strangers. The breed was developed to guard large flocks and herds against wolves and other predators while accompanying them on long seasonal migrations across Portugal.
