The Istrian Coarse-Haired Hound originates from the Istrian Peninsula, a region shared today by Croatia and Slovenia, and is considered a younger development from the Istrian Shorthaired Hound with wirehaired crosses introduced in the 19th century. It is a determined, passionate, and enduring hunter with a melodious voice, known for being persistent on the trail and somewhat independent in nature. This breed was developed to hunt hare and fox through the rugged, rocky terrain of the Istrian and Dalmatian regions, valued for its stamina and scenting ability in challenging landscapes.
