The Border Terrier originated in the Cheviot Hills along the border between England and Scotland in the 18th century, bred by farmers and huntsmen in the rugged borderlands. They are affectionate, alert, curious, and hardy little dogs with a good-natured temperament that makes them excellent family companions despite their tenacious terrier spirit. They were bred to bolt foxes and other vermin from their dens while being long-legged enough to follow horses during a traditional border hunt.
