The Boerboel is a large South African mastiff-type breed developed by Dutch, German, and Huguenot settlers in South Africa beginning in the 17th century, refined over generations in the harsh conditions of the African bush. They are confident, intelligent, calm, and deeply loyal dogs that are fiercely protective of their families while being affectionate and playful with those they trust. They were bred as a farm guardian dog tasked with protecting homesteads, families, and livestock from predators including lions and leopards on the African frontier.
