The Curly-Coated Retriever is one of the oldest retriever breeds, developed in England by the late 18th century and believed to descend from the English Water Spaniel, Poodle, and Labrador Retriever. It is a confident, independent, and intelligent dog that is affectionate with family but can be reserved around strangers. The breed was developed to retrieve waterfowl and upland game birds for hunters, with its distinctive tight curls providing protection from cold water and dense cover.
