Originating in the Gascony and Saintonge regions of southwestern France, the Gascon Saintongeois was created in the 19th century by crossing the nearly extinct Saint Hubert Jaubert with the Grand Bleu de Gascogne. They are noble, sociable, and energetic hounds with an excellent nose and melodious voice, displaying a friendly and pack-oriented temperament. Developed as a pack hunting hound, the Gascon Saintongeois was bred to hunt large game, particularly deer and hare, across the varied terrain of southern France.
