The Landseer is a breed developed primarily in Germany and Switzerland, though it takes its name from the British painter Sir Edwin Landseer who frequently depicted black-and-white Newfoundland-type dogs in his 19th-century works. They are gentle, calm, and sweet-natured giants known for their patience and devotion to families, including children. Originally bred as water rescue dogs and fishermen's companions, they are powerful swimmers with webbed feet and a natural instinct to save drowning individuals.
