The Löwchen, meaning 'little lion dog' in German, has origins in continental Europe dating back to at least the Renaissance period, appearing in artwork and literature from Germany, France, and the Low Countries. It is a cheerful, affectionate, and lively companion dog that gets along well with children and other animals and thrives on human interaction. Historically, the Löwchen was kept as a lap dog and companion by European nobility, and its distinctive lion clip was said to provide warmth to its owners at night.
