The Karakachan, also known as the Bulgarian Shepherd Dog, originated in Bulgaria and takes its name from the Karakachans, a nomadic Balkan people who developed the breed over thousands of years. They are bold, independent, and intensely loyal dogs that are highly territorial and deeply devoted to protecting their flock and family, often operating without human direction. They were bred to serve as livestock guardian dogs, protecting sheep and goats from wolves, bears, and other large predators across the rugged mountains of the Balkans.
