The Indian Spitz was developed in India during the British colonial era in the 19th century, descended from German Spitz dogs brought to the subcontinent and selectively bred to adapt to the Indian climate. It is a lively, intelligent, and affectionate breed known for its playful personality, keen alertness, and strong loyalty to its family. Originally bred as a companion and watchdog, it gained enormous popularity in India during import restrictions in the 1980s and 1990s when foreign breeds were difficult to obtain.
