Šarplaninac

The Šarplaninac, also known as the Yugoslavian Shepherd Dog, originates from the Šar Mountains on the border of North Macedonia and Kosovo, with a history as a mountain livestock guardian spanning many centuries. They are calm, self-reliant, and intensely loyal dogs that are deeply protective of their flock or family while remaining composed and dignified in their demeanor. This breed was developed by Balkan shepherds to independently guard sheep and goats against wolves, bears, and thieves in remote and challenging mountain environments.
