The American Eskimo Dog descended from European Spitz-type dogs brought to the United States by German immigrants in the 19th century, despite its name having no connection to Eskimo culture. They are highly intelligent, alert, playful, and friendly dogs with a strong desire to please and a notable aptitude for learning tricks and commands. This breed gained widespread popularity performing in traveling circuses during the early 20th century and was kept as a versatile farm watchdog and family companion throughout its American history.
