The Poitevin is a large French scenthound originating in the Poitou region of western France, with its development traced back to the 17th century when the Marquis Francois de Larrye created the breed by crossing several notable French hound lines. It is a noble, determined, and energetic dog with great endurance, bred for pack work and capable of running for hours, though it can be affectionate in a domestic setting. The breed was developed to hunt wolves and large game in packs, prized for its speed, stamina, and powerful voice in the field.
