The Plott Hound originated in the United States, descended from Hanoverian Schweisshunds brought to North Carolina by German immigrant Johannes Plott in the mid-1700s, and is the official state dog of North Carolina. It is tenacious, bold, and loyal, possessing a strong will and great stamina that make it both a determined hunter and a devoted family dog. The breed was developed primarily to hunt large game such as bear and boar in the rugged terrain of the Appalachian Mountains.
