The Catahoula Leopard Dog is the official state dog of Louisiana, USA, believed to have descended from dogs bred by Native Americans crossed with dogs brought by Spanish explorers in the 16th century. It is an energetic, assertive, and highly intelligent breed that is intensely loyal to its family but can be independent and strong-willed. Originally bred to hunt wild boar and herd hogs by driving them into pens, it is a versatile working dog of the American South.
