The Kuvasz is an ancient Hungarian breed with roots tracing back to Turkey and Tibet, brought to Hungary during the Middle Ages where it became a favored dog of Hungarian nobility, including King Matthias I. They are intelligent, loyal, and intensely protective dogs that are devoted to their families but naturally suspicious of strangers, requiring early socialization and confident handling. Originally developed as a livestock guardian to protect sheep and cattle from wolves and bears on the Hungarian plains, the Kuvasz also served as a royal guard dog throughout its history.
