The Cimarrón Uruguayo, also known as the Uruguayan Cimarron, is Uruguay's national dog, descended from dogs brought by Spanish and Portuguese colonizers in the 17th and 18th centuries that subsequently became feral and adapted to the South American wilderness. It is a courageous, loyal, and confident breed that is deeply devoted to its family while maintaining a strong guarding instinct and wariness toward strangers. Historically, this breed was used by Uruguayan gauchos for hunting large game, cattle herding, and guarding farms and ranches on the Pampas.
