The American Staffordshire Terrier was developed in the United States during the 19th century from English bull-and-terrier crosses brought by immigrants, and was officially recognized by the AKC in 1936. They are confident, courageous, and deeply people-oriented dogs with a strong, muscular build and a notably affectionate temperament toward their families. Originally bred for the show ring and as a companion dog after their bull-baiting and pit-fighting ancestors were refined into a more stable family breed.
