The Rat Terrier is an American breed developed during the late 19th and early 20th centuries from a combination of various terrier and hound breeds including the Smooth Fox Terrier, Beagle, and Whippet, refined on American farms. It is a lively, intelligent, and affectionate breed with a curious nature, quick wit, and a strong desire to please balanced with a typical terrier independence. The breed was developed as a versatile farm dog used primarily to hunt and eliminate rats and other vermin, as well as to hunt small game such as squirrel and rabbit.
