The American Bulldog descended from the Old English Bulldog brought to North America by working-class immigrants in the 17th and 18th centuries, where it was preserved in the rural American South when the breed nearly disappeared in England. They are confident, loyal, assertive, and deeply affectionate with family, known for their courage and strong protective instincts. This breed was developed as a versatile farm utility dog used for catching feral hogs and cattle, guarding property, and general farm work.
