The Dutch Shepherd originated in the Netherlands in the early 19th century, developed from the same general stock as the Belgian and German Shepherds to meet the needs of Dutch shepherds and farmers. It is a highly intelligent, loyal, and versatile dog with a lively temperament and strong working drive that makes it excel in obedience, agility, and protection sports. The breed was developed to herd sheep and cattle, guard farms, pull milk carts, and serve as an all-purpose working dog across the Dutch countryside.
