The Boxer was developed in Germany in the late 19th century, descended from the now-extinct Bullenbeisser and crossed with the English Bulldog to create a streamlined, athletic working breed. They are playful, loyal, energetic, and affectionate dogs known for their exuberant and clownish personality combined with a protective and courageous nature. They were originally bred as hunting assistants used to seize and hold large game such as bear, boar, and deer until the hunter arrived, and later became versatile working and guard dogs.
