The McNab is an American herding breed developed in the late 19th century in Mendocino County, California, by Scottish immigrant Alexander McNab, who crossed Scottish Collies with Basque herding dogs. It is an exceptionally intelligent, driven, and loyal dog with intense focus, remarkable athleticism, and a strong work ethic that demands consistent mental and physical stimulation. This breed was specifically developed to herd cattle and sheep across the rugged, hot terrain of northern California, where it proved highly effective due to its endurance and agility.
