The Barbet is an ancient French water dog whose history can be traced back to at least the 16th century in France and other parts of Western Europe. It is a cheerful, sociable, and highly intelligent breed that is known for being exceptionally good-natured with children, other dogs, and strangers alike. This breed was developed as a water retriever for hunting waterfowl in marshes and wetlands, excelling at swimming in cold conditions.
