The Great Dane originated in Germany, where it was developed over centuries from large boarhounds and mastiff-type dogs. Despite its imposing size, the breed is famously gentle, affectionate, and friendly, earning it the nickname 'the Apollo of dogs.' It was originally bred to hunt large, fierce game such as wild boar and to serve as a guardian of German nobility.
