American Akita
Large sizeShort coatHigh sheddingModerate energyLow barking
The American Akita descends from the large spitz-type dogs of the Akita region in Japan, with the modern American strain diverging after World War II when soldiers brought Japanese Akitas back to the United States. They are loyal, dignified, and deeply devoted to their families, though they can be aloof with strangers and strong-willed with other animals. Originally bred in Japan as a versatile hunting dog capable of tracking and holding large game such as bears, boars, and deer.
