The American Cocker Spaniel developed from English Cocker Spaniels brought to North America and was selectively bred into a distinct type by the late 19th century, becoming the smallest member of the AKC Sporting Group. They are merry, gentle, affectionate, and eager to please, known for their sweet temperament and adaptability as both a family companion and a working dog. This breed was originally developed to flush and retrieve woodcock and other upland game birds, with the name 'cocker' derived directly from this hunting role.
