The Artois Hound is one of the oldest French scenthound breeds, originating in the Artois region of northern France and descended from large hounds used during the Middle Ages, later refined to a smaller size for hunting on foot. They are tenacious, courageous, good-natured, and calm in the home but highly driven and focused in the field. Bred to hunt hare and other small game by scent, working in small packs through the farmland and forests of northern France.
