The Kai Ken is one of Japan's six native breeds and originates from the mountainous Kai province, now Yamanashi Prefecture, where it developed in isolation for centuries. They are loyal, intelligent, and devoted dogs that bond deeply with their families and are known for being naturally clean, alert, and somewhat reserved with strangers. They were bred to hunt deer, wild boar, and bear in the steep and densely forested mountains of central Japan.
