The Bouvier des Flandres originated in the Flanders region of Belgium in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, developed by farmers who needed a powerful and versatile all-purpose farm dog. They are intelligent, loyal, calm, and courageous dogs that are highly trainable and excel in obedience, protection, and working roles. They were originally used for general farm work including cattle herding, cart pulling, and butter churning, and later served with great distinction as ambulance and messenger dogs during World War I.
