The American Pit Bull Terrier was developed in the United States from bulldogs and terriers that were originally brought over from England and Ireland in the 19th century. They are courageous, affectionate, and loyal dogs known for their love of people and their exuberant, playful personalities. Originally bred for blood sports such as bull-baiting and later dog fighting, they also served as farm dogs and loyal family companions.
