The Russo-European Laika is a spitz-type hunting breed developed in the forests of northern Russia and Scandinavia, standardized during the Soviet era from traditional aboriginal hunting dogs of the Komi and other northern peoples. It is a bold, alert, and highly driven breed with strong hunting instincts, considerable independence, and a close but intense bond with its handler. This breed was developed to locate and hold large and small game, including squirrel, bear, elk, and wild boar, using its voice to alert the hunter to quarry.
