The Presa Canario, or Perro de Presa Canario, originated in the Canary Islands of Spain, developed through crosses of indigenous Canarian dogs with mastiff-type breeds brought by Spanish conquistadors and settlers. They are confident, calm, and dominant dogs that are deeply loyal and protective of their family while remaining reserved and wary of strangers, requiring experienced and firm ownership. This breed was originally developed to work with livestock, guard farms, and engage in dog fighting, making it a powerful and determined working dog of the Canary Islands.
