The Azawakh is an ancient sighthound breed originating from the Sahel region of West Africa, particularly from the area around the Azawakh Valley spanning modern-day Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, where it has existed for thousands of years among Tuareg nomads. They are elegant, loyal, deeply affectionate with their family, and notably aloof and reserved with strangers, possessing a proud and independent character. Bred by Tuareg, Fula, and other nomadic peoples of the southern Sahara to hunt gazelle and hare at high speeds across vast desert terrain and to guard camps.
