The South Russian Ovcharka developed on the steppes of southern Russia and Ukraine, with influences from European herding breeds brought to the region in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is independent, courageous, and deeply loyal to its owner, but can be wary and dominant with strangers and other animals. This breed was used to guard and herd large flocks of sheep across the vast open grasslands of the southern Russian steppe.
