The Portuguese Sheepdog, known as the Cão da Serra de Aires, originated in the Alentejo region of Portugal and is believed to have been developed in the early 20th century, possibly with Briard influence. They are highly intelligent, lively, and versatile dogs with a strong sense of humor and a deep loyalty to their family, sometimes described as monkey-like due to their expressive faces and agile movements. This breed was developed to herd and guard sheep, cattle, goats, and horses across the plains and mountains of southern Portugal.
