The Icelandic Sheepdog is Iceland's only native dog breed, descended from the Nordic spitz-type dogs brought to Iceland by Viking settlers around 874 AD, making it one of the oldest herding breeds in the world. It is an enthusiastic, friendly, and inquisitive dog with a cheerful disposition, strong loyalty to its family, and an outgoing nature that makes it sociable with people and other animals. This breed was developed to herd and protect livestock, particularly sheep, in Iceland's rugged volcanic landscape, using its voice and agility to manage flocks on difficult terrain.
