The Australian Terrier was developed in Australia during the 19th century from several British terrier breeds including the Rough-Coated Terrier, Dandie Dinmont, Skye, Yorkshire, and Cairn Terriers brought by early settlers. They are spirited, alert, courageous, and loyal dogs with a keen and curious nature who form strong bonds with their families. Bred to hunt and exterminate rats, snakes, and other vermin on Australian farms and homesteads, and also used as watchdogs and companions.
