The Cão de Gado Transmontano is a massive Portuguese livestock guardian breed originating from the Trás-os-Montes region in the rugged northeastern corner of Portugal, with a history spanning many centuries. It is an independent, fearless, and deeply loyal dog with powerful protective instincts and a calm, affectionate nature with its trusted family and flock. The breed was developed by Portuguese shepherds to protect large herds of cattle and sheep from wolves and other predators in the remote mountain terrain of Trás-os-Montes.
