The Smaland Hound, or Smålandsstövare, is Sweden's oldest native hound breed, originating in the Småland province of southern Sweden and developed during the 16th and 17th centuries from local hounds crossed with continental European breeds. They are determined, loyal, and even-tempered dogs that form strong attachments to their owners and display a calm and steady personality when not working. Bred as a versatile scenthound for tracking and hunting hare and fox through the cold and densely forested Swedish landscape, the Smaland Hound was valued for its ability to work in harsh conditions with minimal assistance.
