The Boykin Spaniel is an American breed that originated in South Carolina in the early 20th century, developed by hunters in the Wateree River Swamp region who needed a compact spaniel capable of working from small boats. They are friendly, eager-to-please, energetic, and cheerful dogs that make excellent family companions as well as skilled hunting partners. They were bred to flush and retrieve wild turkey and waterfowl in the swamps and rivers of South Carolina, small enough to fit in a boat canoe without rocking it.
