The Griffon Nivernais is an ancient French hunting breed believed to have descended from shaggy oriental scent hounds brought to France during the Crusades and later developed in the Nivernais region. It is a serious, reserved, and hardy dog with great stamina and independence, forming a strong but not overly demonstrative bond with its handler. This breed was developed to hunt large and dangerous game such as wolf and wild boar across cold, rugged, and densely wooded terrain in central France.
