The American Water Spaniel is one of the few dog breeds developed entirely in the United States, originating in the Great Lakes region during the 19th century, particularly in Wisconsin and Minnesota. They are eager, happy, and versatile dogs that are highly trainable and form strong bonds with their owners. Bred to be an all-around hunting dog capable of flushing and retrieving waterfowl from small boats in the cold marshes and rivers of the Midwest.
