The Japanese Terrier originated in Japan during the 17th century, developed after small smooth-coated terriers were brought to Nagasaki by Dutch and English traders and crossbred with local dogs. They are lively, affectionate, and intelligent dogs that form strong bonds with their families and tend to be alert and playful. They were originally kept as companion dogs and lapdogs by Japanese nobility and upper-class families.
