The Kooikerhondje is a Dutch breed with origins dating back to the 16th century, depicted in paintings by Dutch masters such as Rembrandt and Jan Steen. They are cheerful, alert, and good-natured dogs with a lively personality, though they can be somewhat reserved with strangers and sensitive to harsh handling. This breed was originally developed to lure and drive ducks into cage traps called eendenkooi, working alongside hunters in the Netherlands.
